The utility bill arrives, and you suddenly wish you had one of those big wind turbines on top of the house to cut your costs. If a
Wayland company has its way, you'll be seeing more homes that do.
Bauer Power Inc., an 8-year-old provider of renewable-energy services, recently acquired the dealer/installer rights for
residential applications of the SWIFT wind turbine, a rooftop unit that generates electricity by harnessing the wind, "providing a
cost-effective energy source for domestic, community and industrial use,'' the company says.
The turbines are manufactured by Cascade Engineering, of Grand Rapids. They produce less than 35 decibels of noise at any wind
speed.
"This is the perfect time and place for renewable energy,'' said Mark Bauer, owner of the company that bears his name and an
alternative-energy proponent.
He said Michigan is the 14th-windiest state in the country. With bills moving through the state Legislature that support the use of
renewable energy, "it's a perfect time to invest in both your own personal future as well as that of our state,'' he said.
The initial cost of the turbine may get a bigger reaction than a high utility bill, however. Each device retails for about $8,500 and
carries a $2,000 installation fee.
A company spokeswoman said, however, that the turbine reduces the amount of electricity used from conventional means,
reduces carbon emissions and lowers electricity bills. More information is available at www.swiftwindturbine.com and
