Michigan's largest sustainable energy event takes place Friday through Sunday at the Manistee County Fairgrounds in Onekama.
For the third year, it brings together businesses, citizens and lawmakers to discuss issues and explore green choices in everything
from heating and cooling to clothing and investments.
"We see it as important to get people outside of the usual suit-and-tie culture to cultivate relationship building and to realize
we're all in this together," said Jeremy Wittrock, spokesperson for the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association, alternative
technology advocates and event co-organizers.
More than 60 workshops and speakers and 100 exhibitors dedicated to energy solutions are scheduled. Attendance is anticipated
to jump 25% over last year's event with 6,000 participants expected to walk through the gates.
"The sustainable Michigan effort has gained tremendous momentum from events like this," said Allan O'Shea, chair of Manistee
County's Board of Commissioners and event co-founder. "It helps people understand they have options to alleviate some of the
pain they have with their energy costs."
Gov. Jennifer Granholm will present her case for Michigan's 21st Century Energy Plan, a blueprint for growing and powering the
state, during Friday's welcome address.
"My passion and her passion are the same," O'Shea said. "We're trying to create jobs -- one job and one company at a time."
Mark Bauer of the Grand Rapids-area firm Bauer Power Inc. is taking advantage of the fair to do just that. Bauer designs and
installs wind and solar systems. He is to debut a Michigan-manufactured wind machine at the fair in hopes the exposure sparks
sales and demand for production.
Bauer's system mounts to roofs or buildings and is applicable for urban and rural settings and is suited for residential or
commercial use.
"The concept of making our own energy is a new thought," he said. "We have to stop thinking about a faraway source and think
about what is there for our homes and businesses."
