MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Many top state leaders have been saying that Michigan is behind the curve in trying to create
energy from the sun and wind, and that thousands of jobs could be created.

On Thursday, Newschannel 3 spoke to a local company making a business out of solar energy.

Solar panels and wind turbines are all for sale at Bauer Power, one of the few stores in Michigan to sell and install the
technology. It's technology many believe could help the environment and ease up on the power grid.

Environmentalist Bret Dorman says green technology is the future.

"It's going to be a lot less of an odd sight to see a solar panel on somebody's roof or mounted in their yard," Dorman said.

In some places around West Michigan, people have already installed solar panels for electricity, creating power to ease
dangerous emissions into the environment. From city governments like the one in Grand Rapids, to private home owners; work has
begun to try and hit a goal that ten percent of the state's electric power comes from renewable resources.

"You can invest now in renewable energy," said Jen Rolston of Bauer Power, "or you can just continue to pay the increasing
rates over time, buying from the coal plants."

Right now it's a costly venture for home owners. It can cost up to $25,000 to install an effective system, but with a 30 percent
federal tax credit and escalating power costs, the folks at Bauer Power say it's worth it for the future.

"We have young families that want to do something for their children to come," Rolston said, "but we also have people from the
older generation as well, because they know they want to do it for their grandchildren."

Even during these tough economic times, environmentalists are pleased the candidates are talking energy, and talking about
renewable resources to combat climate change.

"What they're proposing and looking to accomplish advocating for renewable resources and alternative forms of energy is
encouraging," said Bret Dorman, "we just really haven't seen that in the last 25 years."

Bauer Power is based in Wayland, and there is a plant that manufactures the solar panels in Greenville.
